# Create a class

> Make a class by hand or import one from Google Classroom, and set the time zone that every due date will follow.

### Limits and notes

* **Time zone is a class setting**, not an account setting. It decides how every due date and deadline in this class is read and shown.
* The class colour isn't chosen at creation. Change it later under **Settings > General**.
* An assignment can only be created inside a class, so the New assignment dialog offers **New Class** if you have none.

## Create a class by hand

    On your dashboard, under **My Classes**, select **New Class**. The **Add a class** dialog offers **Import from Google Classroom** and **Create a class manually**. Choose the second.

    In **Create a class**: **Class name**, such as "US History — Period 2"; **Grade levels**; **Subject**. All three are required. **Time zone** \[1] is filled from your profile; change it if the class runs elsewhere. **Standards** is optional and can be set any time.

    Select **Create class**. A toast reads **Class created** and the class appears in the rail. Open it for its **Overview**, where a checklist walks you through adding students and a first assignment.

## Import from Google Classroom

Choose **Import from Google Classroom** instead. The import runs in three steps, **Connect**, **Select courses** and **Configure**, and brings across the course, you, any co-teachers, and every student whose email Google shares. Manual enrolment is off by default on an imported class. [Import classes and rosters](/teachers/google-classroom/import-classes) covers it.

## How to tell it worked

The class is in the rail under **My Classes** with its student count, and its **Overview** tab shows **Finish setting up this class**.

## If something goes wrong

    The dialog names the field: "Give your class a name.", "Pick at least one grade level.", or "Choose a subject."

    The class time zone is wrong. Change it under **Settings > General > Time zone**.

    The dialog closes without opening the class. Find it in the rail on the left, or refresh.
