# Organize assignments into folders

> Group assignments by unit or topic so a long class list stays usable. Folders change nothing students see.

### Limits and notes

* Folders are for your own organisation. Students never see them.
* An assignment with no folder sits under **Uncategorized**, listed last.
* Deleting a folder deletes nothing else; its assignments move to Uncategorized.

## Create and use folders

    On the **Assignments** tab, select **New folder**, type a name such as "Unit 3 · Poetry" and select **Create folder**.

    Open an assignment row's menu and select **Move to folder**, then pick the folder. To move several, tick their rows and use **Move to folder** in the bar at the bottom. **No folder (uncategorized)** takes one back out.

    Use the arrows on a folder header to move it up or down. The header's menu has **Rename folder** and **Delete folder**.

You can also file an assignment as you create it: the **Folder** field is in Instant's **Materials & organization** section, on Guided's **Details** step, and under **Settings > General** afterwards.

## Group by something else

The **Group by** control at the top switches between **Folder**, **Status** and **None**. The **Format**, **Status** and **Folder** filters narrow the list; folder reordering is hidden while a filter is on.

## How to tell it worked

The list shows a header per folder with its assignments beneath, and **Uncategorized** at the bottom for the rest.

## If something goes wrong

    Nothing was lost. The assignments are under **Uncategorized**; make the folder again and move them back.
