# Split one scan into many submissions

> Turn one scanned stack of the whole class into a submission per student with Batch Scan.

### Limits and notes

* A batch scan is one PDF, up to 250 MB, holding every student's pages in order.
* Not available for video and audio assignments.
* Every submission the split produces counts toward your monthly limit.

### Before you start

Scan the stack as one PDF with each student's pages together and in order. Blank separator pages are fine; you can skip them afterwards. Scan at a normal resolution so the file stays under 250 MB.

## Upload and split

    On the assignment's **Submissions** tab, select **Upload submission**. In Instant setup, the same choice sits in **4. Student submissions**, where a hotspot asks "Scanned a stack of work at once?".

  <Step title="Choose Batch Scan">
    Select **Batch Scan**: "One PDF with multiple students' work — we'll split it into a submission per student." In Instant setup the control reads **Separate files** / **Batch Scan**.

  <Step title="Add the PDF">
    Drop the one PDF in, or select **Your device** or **Google Drive**. The dialog confirms "We'll detect each student and create separate submissions."

    Select **Upload & split**. The **Match submissions** screen opens and reads "Reading your scan to find where each student's work begins — this can take a minute…".

  <Step title="Check the split">
    Each proposed submission shows its page range, the name GradingPal detected, and a confidence pill. Rows that look off carry a **Fix pages** button and an amber note. Choose the right student on any row that says **Needs student**.

    Select **Confirm & grade N**. A toast says **N submissions added — grading started**, and every row on the Submissions tab moves to **AI grading**.

## When the split lands in the wrong place

Select **Adjust pages**. The scan opens as a board of numbered submissions, **Sub 1**, **Sub 2** and so on, each holding its pages. Drag a page to the submission it belongs to, select **Add submission** to start a new one, or use the skip control on a blank separator page. Select **Done** to return to the list.

**Re-split** throws the split away and reads the whole scan again. If you've made page or student changes, it asks first: "This re-reads the whole scan and replaces your manual page and student changes with a fresh split."

## How to tell it worked

The summary line above the list reads **N of N ready** with nothing after it. Once you confirm, the Submissions tab shows one row per student, all in **AI grading**, then **Needs review**.

## If something goes wrong

    "A batch scan must be a single PDF" means you added a second file or a non-PDF. "A batch scan must be under 250 MB" means the scan is too big; rescan at a lower resolution or split the stack in two.

    The banner says so. Open **Adjust pages** and drag those pages onto a student, or skip them if they're blank.

    The row says "Also assigned to" the other file. Pick a different student on one of them; **Confirm & grade** stays greyed out until you do.

  <Accordion title="I closed the screen before confirming">
    The scan stays uploaded, but the split is discarded. Open it again and the split runs from scratch.
