# Match submissions to students

> Confirm which file belongs to which student before grading starts, and fix the ones GradingPal wasn't sure about.

### Limits and notes

* Nothing is graded until you select **Confirm & grade**. Closing the screen discards your matches.
* Two files can't share a student. If a student already has a submission, the new file replaces it and the row says so.
* A student who isn't on the class list yet can be added from the row.

## Confirm the matches

    Each row is one file: a thumbnail, the file name, **Detected:** and the name GradingPal read from the file or its name, a confidence pill \[1], and a student dropdown. The summary above the list counts how many rows are ready and how many still need a student.

  <Step title="Trust the green rows, check the amber and red ones">
    The pill tells you how sure GradingPal is.

    | **Matched · 92%** | Confident. Worth a glance, not a check           |
    | **Verify · 60%**  | Between 50 and 84 percent. Look at the thumbnail |
    | **Low · 30%**     | Under 50 percent. Probably wrong                 |
    | **Needs student** | No student chosen. Blocks confirming             |
    | **Assigned**      | You chose the student yourself                   |
    | **New student**   | Matched to a student you added on this screen    |

  <Step title="Fix a row">
    Open the dropdown and pick the right student. To add someone who isn't on the class list, choose **Add new student** at the top of the dropdown, check the first and last name, and select **Add student**. To leave a file out, select the skip control on its row; **Undo** brings it back.

  <Step title="For a batch scan, fix the pages if needed">
    Select **Adjust pages** \[2] to move pages between submissions, or **Re-split** to read the scan again from scratch. [Split one scan into many submissions](/teachers/collect/batch-scan) covers both.

  <Step title="Confirm and grade">
    Select **Confirm & grade N**. The screen closes, a toast says **N submissions added — grading started**, and the rows appear on the Submissions tab in **AI grading**.

## How to tell it worked

No row says **Needs student**, the summary reads **N of N ready**, and **Confirm & grade** is live. If it's greyed out, the text beside it says why: rows that need a student, rows that share one, or pages not yet assigned.

## If something goes wrong

    The row says "No name detected — open the file to check". Select the thumbnail to see the file, then pick the student.

    Both rows turn red: "Also assigned to" the other file. Choose a different student on one of them, or skip the duplicate.

  <Accordion title="This student already has a submission">
    The amber note says the new file will replace it. That's usually what you want for a resubmission; if not, pick a different student or skip the file.

  <Accordion title="I confirmed and a name is wrong">
    Before grading finishes, there's nothing to undo. Once graded, open the row's menu and select **Reassign student**. Reassigning is blocked once the work has been shared.
