# Choose an assignment type

> Which of the eight types fits the work you're setting, what changes because of it, and when the type locks.

The type picker shows two groups. Behind them are two ways of grading, and one type that behaves like a third.

## The two groups

**Open response**: the AI grades each piece of work against a rubric you design. **Question based**: the AI extracts the questions from your handout and grades each one against an answer key.

## The one that behaves like a third

**Video & Audio** sits in the open-response group at setup and uses a rubric, but it has its own upload rules and its own grading screen. Uploads are media only, up to 250 MB each, with no Batch Scan, and you grade beside a player, adding comments at the moment they apply. [Create a video or audio assignment](/teachers/create/video-audio) says it once, so it doesn't surprise you later.

## When the type locks

The type isn't locked after setup. It locks once the assignment has submissions; the cards grey out with the note "The assignment type can't be changed because this assignment already has submissions." For question-based work, **Type** and **Handout** also lock once the handout has been read. Questions and answer keys stay editable in both cases.

## The All Assignment Types add-on

On the Lite plan, quizzes, exams, worksheets, problem sets and video need the **All Assignment Types** add-on. Without it those cards carry an **Add-on** badge, and work uploaded to one is held rather than graded until you add it. Pro includes every type.

## In Instant setup

Instant has the same types in an **Assignment type** dropdown, with singular names and one extra option: **Auto-detect**, which lets the AI classify the assignment from what you paste or upload.
