# Create a quiz or exam

> Upload the paper, let the AI pull out the questions, and approve the answer keys before anything is graded.

### Limits and notes

* The handout is one document up to 100 MB. A text PDF beats a photo.
* Once the handout has been read, **Type** and **Handout** lock. Questions and answer keys stay editable.
* Reading a short quiz takes a minute or two. A long exam can take five or six.

### Before you start

Have the blank paper as a file, and your answer key if you have one. Without one, the AI drafts an answer key for every question and you approve it.

## Set up a quiz or exam

    Choose **Quizzes** or **Exams** under **Question based**.

  <Step title="Handout">
    Type an **Assignment title**. Upload the blank paper under the handout heading; the AI reads it and pulls out each question. Add your answer key under **Answer key / rubric**, or leave it blank. Under **Grading rules**, **Award partial credit** is on by default, giving credit for each correct part of a question that accepts more than one answer. Set **Check grammar** and the **Feedback length**, then select **Continue**.

    The page reads **Reading your assignment…** and moves on by itself. If nothing has changed after a few minutes, refresh.

  <Step title="Questions">
    Check what came out. Documents are messy, and the AI is reading one. Fix wording, points, sections and sub-parts, then **Save changes** and **Continue**. [Review questions and answer keys](/teachers/create/questions-and-answer-keys) covers the editor.

  <Step title="Answer keys">
    An answer key is drafted for every question as you arrive. Mark the correct answers, check the points, and edit the rubric on open-ended questions. **Continue** finalises them.

    Choose where the work comes from, and select **Continue**. The assignment opens on its **Submissions** tab.

In Instant, upload the paper in **1. Assignment**, choose **Quiz** or **Exam** as the type or leave **Auto-detect**, and add the answer key in **2. Rubric / answer key**. Everything else is drafted without a stop.

## How to tell it worked

The **Assignment** tab lists the questions with their points and answer keys. Uploaded work grades per question, and the grading screen shows a question rail on the left.

## If something goes wrong

    "We read your handout but couldn't pull any questions out of it." A clearer copy usually does it: a text PDF beats a photo, and a locked file can't be read. Select **Try a different file**.

    The file is scanned badly, photographed, or password-protected. Fix the file and select **Try again**.

  <Accordion title="The questions came out wrong">
    Edit them on the **Questions** step rather than re-uploading. Merging, splitting and renumbering are all there.

    On Lite, question-based types need the **All Assignment Types** add-on. Work you upload before adding it is held, not lost.
