# Create a video or audio assignment

> Set up media work and know its limits before you ask thirty students to record something.

### Limits and notes

* **250 MB per file**, media only: MP4, MOV, WebM and the other video types; MP3, WAV, M4A-style audio and the rest. A document dropped in is refused: "This is a video assignment — only video & audio files can be graded."
* **No mixing.** One assignment can't hold documents and media.
* **No Batch Scan.** One file per student.
* Ask GradingPal cannot watch or listen to a recording. Grading comments are yours to place; the assistant helps with wording.

## Set it up

A video or audio assignment is set up like any open-response work: against a rubric. In Guided the steps are **Type**, **Details**, **Rubric**, **Feedback**, **Student work**; choose **Video & Audio** under **Open response** and follow [Create a writing or essay assignment](/teachers/create/writing) from there. In Instant, choose **Video & Audio** as the type and add the recordings under **4. Student submissions** as **Separate files**.

Tell students the limit before they record. A phone video at full quality passes 250 MB in a few minutes; exporting at 720p is usually enough.

## What grading looks like later

The grading screen has a player with a scrubber. You add a comment at the moment it applies, and the student sees it at the same moment on their player. Scoring against the rubric sits beside it. [Grade a video or audio assignment](/teachers/review/video-and-audio) covers the screen.

## How to tell it worked

The type card in the assignment's **Overview** reads **Video & Audio**, and the upload dialog says **Video & audio must be under 250 MB**.

## If something goes wrong

    Ask for a smaller export. 720p is usually enough. For work already in Google Classroom, the row says so and asks for a smaller version to be uploaded there.
