# Regrade a submission

> What a regrade replaces, when it's blocked, and when to change a score or ask the assistant instead.

A regrade runs the AI again on a submission from scratch. It's the right tool when the assignment itself changed. It's the wrong tool for fixing one score, and it costs you your own edits.

## Four facts

1. **A regrade replaces everything.** The AI's grades, the feedback, the comments, and any changes you made yourself are all replaced by a fresh run. The confirmation says so: "The current grades, feedback, and any edits you've made will be replaced by a fresh AI grading run."
2. **A regrade is free.** A submission is charged against your monthly limit once, when it's created. Grading it again doesn't count.
3. **Shared work can't be regraded.** Once a student has their feedback, the option is greyed out with the note **Shared with the student — locked**.
4. **Editing the assignment offers a bulk regrade.** Change the instructions, rubric, questions, grading rules or feedback settings after work has been graded, and GradingPal asks **Save and re-grade N submissions?** with two buttons: **Save & re-grade** and **Keep editing**.

## What survives

Pages you assigned to a question-based submission stay assigned, so a page fix isn't undone by a regrade. Your override on a criterion does not survive; see fact one.

## What this does not mean

* **A regrade is not undo.** It doesn't restore an earlier grade. It produces a new one.
* **A regrade doesn't notify anyone.** Students see nothing until you share.
* **A regrade doesn't change the assignment.** To change the rubric or questions, edit the assignment; the regrade is offered afterwards.
