Where it lives
Open the class and select Standards. With Track standards mastery on, a Mastery / Scores toggle appears, and By standard / By student pivots the grid.The levels
The names depend on the scale you chose. On the default 4-level performance scale they are Below, Approaching, Meets and Exceeds. Until a student has enough graded work on a standard, the cell reads Insufficient evidence with a count, such as “2 of 3”. Three graded evidence points is the default minimum; you can change it. Three tiles at the top summarise the class: Standards on track, Students needing support (at the lowest level on two or more standards), and Insufficient evidence.The evidence trail
Select any cell to open the Evidence trail. It shows the student’s level, a chart of how it moved, How this was calculated with the roll-up method and the count of evidence points, and every graded item that contributed: the assignment, the criterion or question, the score, the assessment category and its weight. View submission opens the work itself.Assessment purpose
Each assignment can carry an Assessment purpose, set under Settings > Standards, which maps to a category and its weight. A 2× category counts twice as much toward mastery; a 0× category still appears in the trail but never moves the level. The presets are Summative / Formative and Practice → Final.Overrides
From the evidence trail, Set level or Change level lets you set a student’s level yourself, with a reason such as “Re-assessed one-on-one after the exam”. The cell then reads set by teacher, and Revert to computed puts the calculation back. Adjust on one piece of evidence changes what that result counts as toward the standard without touching the grade on the assignment.What this does not mean
- Turning mastery on doesn’t regrade anything. It fills in from work already graded.
- A class average is not a mastery level. The Scores view shows averages; the Mastery view shows levels with thresholds, weights and a minimum. Conflating the two is the most common confusion in the feature.
- Changing the settings doesn’t keep the old levels. “Previous calculated levels are not saved.”
